According to Greek mythology, the allegory of night is used as a symbol of origin, potential possibilities, and the source of existence. Night gives birth to the sky light and the fruits of the earth possessing an amazing power.
The ancients believed that plants, animals, and people grew only in the night. Celtic culture used night as a synonym for "beginning" as night gave birth to the light of day. The candle in this painting is pouring out light in the dark night similar to the light coming from the sun.
There is also another meaning within this painting. The molten wax looks like the hot bodies of living couples that exist throughout time, changing one another and leaving behind the inexhaustible power of love. The moth is an allegory for the soul attracted to the power of light. In China, the moth is considered to be a symbol of the soul, renovation, and immortality. The ancient Chinese saw similarities between a moth and a person in love. "Moth going mad because of love" is a beautiful metaphor from Oriental poetry.
