Ancient legends tell of the mythical sacred city of Shangri-La (or Shambala) where beings of higher consciousness meditate and pray. This city of unearthly beauty was said to be hidden in the most remote regions of the Himalayan mountains. Possibly the last remnant of a now vanished civilization, Shangri-La is said to exist in dimensions not perceptible to our material senses.
In this painting, we see the angelic beings of Shangri-La. The rain symbolizes spiritual truth. On a bridge over the chasm, an ordinary mortal man makes his way to Shangri-La.
As a mountain top is the place where Heaven meets the earth, a mountain top is frequently used esoterically to represent a point of conjunction between the earthly or material realism and the spiritual dimension. A journey to the mountain top has been used symbolically, and in legend to represent a spiritual journey to contact divinity.
