Epiphany

Epiphany is an original oil painting by Victor Bregeda in which we witness John the Baptist baptizing Jesus beneath clouds glowing with the peaceful countenance of god.

Rather than taking water from the lake, John uses large droplets of rain that descend from the sky, seemingly from the mind of god. The juxtaposition of the spiritual realm and the world of man is portrayed by the flowing of the river Jordan over a wooden table with a drawer full of pink roses. Spirit literally seeps into, is absorbed by, and nourishes the natural world just as water sustains the flowers. Victor often uses roses to represent purity. A white dove flies off to the left to announce the arrival of the saviour of mankind.

Epiphany is generally known as a Christian feast day, usually January 6th, which celebrates the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ. Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God. It is also called Theophany, especially by Eastern Christians.
