In "The Challenge", Victor depicts Cervantes' hero, ready to do battle with an old windmill, believing that it is an evil giant. Don Quixote always maintains his hope that chivalry will return to this mundane world. Those around him regard him as ridiculous and lacking in common sense. But who is truly the more practical: the person whose thoughts stay within the everyday world, or, the optimistic dreamer who envisions his noble ideals and through that vision, brings meaning and beauty to life? "The Challenge" is a reminder of what the dreamers, the artists, and the visionaries contribute to the lives of those around them.
Over the lonely figure of Don Quixote is a watching and compassionate Presence. His courage and his noble ideals, his difficult decisions in the face of his challenges, do not go unnoticed.
There is an element of self-portraiture in Victor's depiction of Don Quixote.
