The central image in Communion can be perceived either as a candle, or as an illuminated figure surrounded by standing figures: Christ and the apostles. The smaller, separate figure represents Judas. The candle and its flame also symbolize God’s word and His light. On the table to the left of the candle, we see the bread and the chalice of wine, prepared for communion. The wax ladder symbolizes the evolution of our consciousness, from the material plane to higher and higher levels of spiritual awareness.
The candle rests on an old Bible, such as would be found in the rural areas of Russia where Victor Bregeda was born and grew up. We see the bookmark positioned in the New Testament area of the Bible. This painting relates to Victor’s prior work, Enigma; both depict a candle and a Bible. In Communion, the bookmark marks the New Testament, and the candle is lit with the light of Christ.
In the sky, the image of God the Father can be seen.
